How to Lose a Lead in the Second Half PDF Print E-mail

A win is a win, though the Riders need to do a better job of holding on to their leads”

A closer inspection of all phases of the game

The Saskatchewan Roughriders should put a disclaimer on all future tickets they hand out. Warning: A Rider victory isn’t always as close as it appears.

In the latest blown lead, the Riders built up an impressive 23-0 lead over the Hamilton Tiger Cats going into half-time. A few big plays later and the Tiger Cats had come all the way back to tie up the ball game. This time however, unlike the game against the Eskimos, the Riders were able to hold on for the 33-23 victory over the Hamilton Tiger Cats.

“A win is a win”, a sentiment some fans will quickly use when talking about last nights game. Others will be irritated by the fact that Hamilton even had a chance to win the ball game.

Let’s take a closer look at how the Riders got, lost and regained the lead throughout the ball game.

“The Riders have seemed to take one step forwards and two steps back this season, winning some tough games and losing some easy ones”.

A closer inspection of all phases of the game

A day after yet another unexpected, humiliating loss, this time to the hands of the BC Lions, Saskatchewan Roughriders fans have been left to lament what the future will hold for their team.

The team currently holds a 3-3 record, after their 35-20 defeat. A record of .500 usually dictates mediocrity, and this label seems to be well befitting of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The Riders have at times looked to be a team ripe with potential. At times the Riders have looked to be the top team in the West, perhaps even Grey Cup contenders. Other times however, they have looked to be nothing more than a team in a rebuilding year.

With so many question marks surrounding this franchise, plenty of those questions not yet answered, fans can simply sit back and wait, praying that the Saskatchewan Roughriders will find some level of consistency.

Let’s take a closer look at yet another disappointing loss.

A closer inspection of all phases of the game

Whether you chalk it up to turnovers, bad calls from the refs, or simply poor coaching, Saskatchewan’s defeat at the hands of the visiting Montreal Alouettes was an ugly one.

In their 43-10 loss, nothing really went right for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. They missed out on big play opportunities and turned the ball over at crucial times in the ball game. But the most disappointing thing was the fact that the Riders missed a chance to grab the best record in the league and a decent lead in the West.

The game was close at times, though the final score may not indicate it.

Montreal only led 14-8 going into the second half, before exploding for 29 second half points. So, what exactly went wrong?

A closer inspection of all phases of the game

It had been a dominate week for the East Division.

The Edmonton Eskimos were steamrolled by the Montreal Alouettes. The Calgary Stampeders came up short against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and BC was embarrassed by the Tiger Cats. However, the East didn’t win every game this week.

Led by a 30 point second quarter outburst, the Saskatchewan Roughriders pounded a tough Toronto Argonaut squad 46-36, capping off a perfect week for Roughriders fans.

In a classic battle of student vs. teacher, Kerry Joseph began the game by outperforming the slightly inured Darian Durant. Durant however showed poise under adversity and guided the Riders to an impressive performance.

Throw in a few timely takeaways and some solid play by the Riders defense, and the Riders now sit atop the West Division at 2-0.

A closer inspection of all phases of the game

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers… the story of the game in Saskatchewan’s 28-24 victory over the BC Lions in the final game of opening week.

The Riders fumbled the ball, had punts blocked, and threw the ball too often into the hands of the Lion defenders. But, when all was said and done, the Riders hung on for a crucial home win against the rival BC Lions. Though the win was sloppy, it was also a reassuring one.

The game confirmed that despite some fans opinions, the sky is not falling in Riderville.

Saskatchewan’s defense is not going to lay down for their opponents. The injuries on the offensive line will not lead to the Riders demise. And turnovers aside, Darian Durant appears to infact be a solid quarterback.

Now it’s time to grade the Riders on their performance. Rider Report Card, for those who are unfamiliar, will take a look at the Riders performance. I will grade the Riders on five categories, offense, defense, special teams, coaching and new this year, efficiency. I will also award the top performer for the Riders in each game.

It’s time for a revamped Rider Report Card:
